Average, not deepest. If your pond runs 2 ft at the shelves and 4 ft in the middle, use about 3 ft.
This gives you the water volume of an empty shell. Rocks, gravel, plant baskets and a heavily planted bog can easily take up 10–15% of that, and the true water volume is what your dosing depends on. If you have a lot of hardscape, dose against the lower figure. When a treatment is dangerous at double strength, confirm your volume by a second method — meter your refill, or salt the pond to a known level and check it with a salinity meter.

How many gallons is my pond?
Measure the pond in feet, work out the volume in cubic feet, then multiply by 7.48 to get US gallons. Which formula you use depends on the shape:
- Rectangular: length × width × average depth × 7.48
- Round: π × radius² × average depth × 7.48 (radius is half the diameter)
- Oval or kidney: π × (length ÷ 2) × (width ÷ 2) × average depth × 7.48
- Irregular: measure the longest and widest points, work it out as a rectangle, then take off about 15% — a freeform pond never fills its bounding box
A 10 ft × 6 ft pond at an average of 3 ft deep is 180 cubic feet, which is about 1,346 gallons. The calculator above does all of this, in feet or meters, and gives you liters and imperial gallons alongside.
Average depth, not deepest — this is where most people go wrong
Almost every pond shelves at the edges. If you measure the deepest point and use that number, you are pretending the whole pond is as deep as its middle, and the result can overstate your volume by 30% or more.
Walk the pond and take depth readings in several places — the shelves, the middle, the bottom drain area if you have one — and average them. If your shelves run 18 inches and the middle is 4 ft, your average is nearer 2.5 ft than 4 ft. That single correction is often the difference between a treatment working and a treatment doing damage.
Rocks, gravel and the water you do not actually have
The formula gives you the volume of an empty shell. It knows nothing about the boulders on your shelves, the gravel on the bottom, the plant baskets, or a bog filter packed with media. All of that displaces water.
In a lightly decorated pond, allow around 10%. In a heavily rocked or gravelled build it can reach 15–20%. The calculator shows you a figure with 10% deducted, and that lower number is the one to dose against — because over-dosing a pond you thought was bigger than it is, is the more dangerous mistake of the two.
Pipework, a settlement chamber and the filter itself work the other way and add volume, sometimes several hundred gallons on a large system. If your filtration holds a meaningful amount of water, measure it and add it in.
How to check your volume without doing any maths
If a treatment is dangerous when overdosed, it is worth confirming your number a second way rather than trusting one calculation.
Meter the refill. The most reliable method. Fit an inline water meter to the hose, drain the pond down a measured amount, and read off exactly how much it takes to bring it back. Do it once, write the figure on the filter housing, and never guess again.
Use salt as a tracer. If you already run salt and have a salinity meter, add a known weight and measure the change. Roughly 8.35 lb of salt per 1,000 gallons raises salinity by 0.1%, so if a known amount moves your reading less than you expected, your pond is bigger than you thought. Common questions
Do I measure to the top of the liner or the water line?
The water line. The pond only holds what is actually in it, and most ponds sit several inches below the top of the liner or wall.
How accurate does my volume need to be?
Within about 10% is fine for salt, KH buffering and routine treatments. It matters far more for anything with a narrow safety margin, where the difference between a therapeutic dose and a harmful one is not large. If you are treating for something serious, meter your refill rather than relying on a measurement.
My pond is an odd shape with several sections. What do I do?
Break it into pieces. Work out each section as its own rectangle, circle or oval, then add them together. It is far more accurate than trying to find one average that covers a shape with a narrow stream at one end and a wide bowl at the other.
How do I convert gallons to liters?
Multiply US gallons by 3.785. For imperial gallons, multiply US gallons by 0.833. Worth being careful here — a US gallon and an imperial gallon differ by about 20%, and dosing instructions do not always say which one they mean.
Why does everything else depend on this number?
Because almost every pond treatment is dosed per unit of water. Get your gallons wrong by 30% and every dose you ever mix is wrong by 30% in the same direction, forever, without anything visibly going wrong until the day it does. Measure it once, properly, and write it down. Then move on to how much fish you are carrying, which is the other number worth knowing.
