Key Benefits
-
Broad-Spectrum Protection: Combats fungal infections (e.g., Saprolegnia), external parasites (e.g., Ichthyophthirius (Ich), Chilodonella, Costia), and protozoan infections, while also treating ammonia, nitrite, and cyanide poisoning.
-
Egg Fungus Prevention: Acts as a gentle disinfectant to protect koi eggs from fungal overgrowth, promoting higher hatch rates.
-
Stress Relief: Enhances oxygen transport in koi blood, reducing stress during transport or acclimation and aiding recovery from chemical toxicities.
-
Safe and Reliable: Formulated for koi and most pond fish, with minimal risk when used as directed. Compatible with crustaceans (e.g., snails, shrimp) when introduced slowly.
-
Easy Application: Liquid solution simplifies dosing for bath treatments, dips, or direct pond application in quarantine settings.
When to Use
KoiShield Methylene Blue Solution is ideal for koi exhibiting signs of distress, such as white spots, cotton-like patches, scratching against surfaces, lethargy, rapid gill movement, or red/purple gills from ammonia/nitrite poisoning. Use it to prevent fungal growth on koi eggs, treat new arrivals during acclimation, or address superficial fungal infections, external parasites, or chemical toxicities. It’s also a valuable “first response” treatment for sick or injured koi before a specific diagnosis is confirmed.

How It Works
Methylene blue acts as an oxygen transporter, converting methemoglobin to hemoglobin to reverse nitrite and cyanide poisoning, improving oxygen delivery in koi. Its anti-fungal and anti-parasitic properties bind to microbial structures, disrupting their growth and eliminating pathogens like Ichthyophthirius and Saprolegnia. It also serves as a mild antibacterial agent, particularly against Gram-positive bacteria, making it a versatile treatment for external infections and stress-related conditions.

Directions for Use
-
Fungus Prevention on Koi Eggs: Add 1 tsp (5 ml) of 2.303% KoiShield Methylene Blue per 10 gallons of water (3 ppm). Treat one day after spawning and continue for 3 days past the free-swimming stage (or 2 days after birth for livebearers). Perform a 25% water change post-treatment.
-
Treatment of Fungus or External Parasites: Remove carbon from filters and add 1 tsp (5 ml) per 10 gallons (3 ppm). Treat for 3-5 days, performing a 25% water change and replacing carbon after treatment.
-
Nitrite/Ammonia Poisoning: Add 1 tsp (5 ml) per 10 gallons (3 ppm) in a quarantine tank. Treat for 3-5 days, followed by a 25% water change and carbon replacement.
-
Dip Treatment: Prepare a non-metallic container with 5 tsp (24.65 ml) per 3 gallons of water (50 ppm). Dip koi for no longer than 10 seconds, then return to the original pond.
-
Pro Tip: Use in a bare quarantine tank to avoid staining silicone or decor. Keep UV lights off and remove carbon/zeolite filters during treatment. Aerate heavily and monitor water quality (ammonia, nitrite, pH).
Product Specifications
-
Sizes: 4 oz (treats 240 gallons at 3 ppm), 16 oz (treats 960 gallons).
-
Active Ingredient: Methylene blue (2.303% aqueous solution).
-
Storage: Store below 77°F (25°C) in a dry place, away from sunlight.
-
Safety: For ornamental fish only; not for human consumption. Wear gloves to avoid skin staining and prevent contact with eyes or clothing.
Precautions
-
Avoid in Main Ponds: Methylene blue can destroy beneficial nitrifying bacteria, disrupting biological filtration. Use in a quarantine tank unless treating chemical poisoning or egg fungus in the main pond.
-
Incompatible Medications: Do not combine with erythromycin, tetracycline, or doxycycline (like KoiVital Antibiotic Duo) to avoid adverse reactions. Wait 30 minutes after using redox-reducing water conditioners before dosing.
-
Plant and Invertebrate Caution: Toxic to live plants and may harm sensitive invertebrates if not introduced slowly.
-
Staining: Will stain silicone, nets, and porous materials blue. Use non-metallic containers for dips and protect clothing/skin during handling.
-
Consult a Specialist: For persistent symptoms or sensitive koi, consult a fish veterinarian to confirm diagnosis and dosing.
