Why Do We Preventatively Treat Every Animal Except Fish?

Why Do We Preventatively Treat Every Animal Except Fish?

by jason Kwalick on Jun 13, 2026

Every day more hobbyists join the group, and every day I see the same question.

"My fish is sick. What should I do?"

The first question I usually ask is simple:

"Have you treated for parasites?"

Most of the time, the answer is no.

After hearing that answer thousands of times over the years, it raises an important question. Why do we perform preventative healthcare on virtually every animal we own except fish?

We deworm dogs. We vaccinate horses. We manage parasites in cattle, goats, sheep, and countless other animals. We understand that preventative care is easier, cheaper, and far more effective than waiting until an animal becomes sick.

Yet when it comes to koi, many hobbyists wait until fish are flashing, isolating, developing ulcers, or showing obvious signs of illness before taking action.

That approach simply does not make sense.

Fish Deserve the Same Level of Care as Any Other Animal

One of the biggest problems in the hobby is the idea that fish are somehow different from other animals.

They are not.

Koi are living animals completely dependent upon the environment we provide. In many ways they are even more dependent on us than dogs, cats, or livestock because they cannot leave their environment when conditions deteriorate.

Every aspect of their health is tied directly to water quality, parasite pressure, nutrition, oxygen levels, and overall husbandry.

If we are willing to practice preventative healthcare with every other animal under our care, there is no logical reason we should ignore preventative healthcare for our fish.

Most Pond Problems Start Long Before Fish Look Sick

One of the most common mistakes hobbyists make is waiting until they can visibly see a problem before doing anything.

Unfortunately, disease does not work that way.

Parasites build slowly. Organic waste accumulates gradually. Stress develops over time. Immune systems weaken little by little. Eventually bacterial infections appear and suddenly people are looking for answers.

The reality is that the problem often started weeks or even months earlier.

The fish were already being affected long before obvious symptoms appeared.

By the time ulcers, flashing, clamped fins, lethargy, or behavioral changes become visible, the underlying issue has often been developing for quite some time.

Why I Believe in Monthly Potassium Permanganate Treatments

One of the most valuable preventative tools available to koi keepers is potassium permanganate.

My product, Purple Magic, is simply a liquid potassium permanganate treatment designed to be easy for hobbyists to use.

When used monthly, potassium permanganate helps suppress some of the most common protozoan parasites found in koi ponds, including Costia, Trichodina, and Chilodonella.

Just as importantly, potassium permanganate oxidizes organic waste throughout the pond system.

It works through the plumbing, filtration, dead zones, and areas where organic material accumulates. Over time, this helps reduce overall parasite pressure while improving pond cleanliness.

Many hobbyists become discouraged when their first treatment does not remain active for very long. In reality, that often means the treatment is doing exactly what it is supposed to do.

Potassium permanganate only works when it encounters material to oxidize. If it is consumed quickly, that usually indicates the pond contains a significant amount of accumulated organic material.

As the pond becomes cleaner over time, treatments often remain active longer and become more effective.

Flukes Still Require Attention

While potassium permanganate does an excellent job helping control protozoan parasites, flukes are a different challenge entirely.

This is why I recommend preventative Praziquantel treatments in the spring and fall.

Flukes remain one of the most common parasites found in koi ponds, and many hobbyists never realize they are present until fish begin showing symptoms.

Preventative management helps keep populations low and greatly reduces the likelihood of major outbreaks.

In more severe infestations, stronger treatment protocols may be required, but maintaining low parasite pressure is always easier than trying to solve a major problem later.

Fish Lice and Anchor Worm Are Easier to Prevent Than Cure

Fish lice and anchor worm are less common than protozoan parasites and flukes in many systems, but they still appear regularly enough to warrant attention.

A preventative treatment once or twice per year can often prevent major infestations from developing.

Again, the philosophy remains the same.

Prevent the problem instead of reacting to the problem.

Water Quality Is Preventative Medicine

Preventative fish care is not limited to parasite management.

Water chemistry is equally important.

Stable KH, adequate minerals, proper oxygen levels, reduced organic waste, and effective filtration all contribute directly to fish health.

Many of the issues hobbyists face are not caused by a lack of medication. They are caused by a lack of environmental stability.

A healthy pond is built through consistent maintenance, stable water chemistry, proper filtration, and good husbandry.

Disease prevention starts with the environment.

A Pond Is Not Something You Set and Forget

A koi pond is not a decoration.

It is not a fountain that happens to contain fish.

It is a living biological system that requires management and maintenance.

You would not place a dog in a kennel and simply walk away. You would not ignore parasite prevention in a horse or a goat. You would not leave any other animal completely unmanaged and expect it to remain healthy indefinitely.

Fish deserve the same level of care and responsibility.

That means maintaining their environment, feeding quality nutrition, monitoring water quality, reducing parasite pressure, and addressing problems before they become emergencies.

Proper Fish Husbandry Creates Healthy Fish

My goal has never been to convince people that every fish needs constant treatment.

My goal has always been to teach proper fish husbandry.

Healthy fish are not created by reacting to disease. Healthy fish are created by preventing disease whenever possible.

When hobbyists focus on stability, water quality, nutrition, parasite management, and preventative care, they experience fewer emergencies, fewer disease outbreaks, and healthier fish overall.

The healthiest ponds are rarely owned by the people who are best at treating disease.

They are usually owned by the people who work hardest to prevent it.
